I didn't end up doing an "unexpected act of kindness" for J yesterday, so I didn't move on to the next dare yet. I'm still at a loss as to what to do for him.
I didn't do the act of kindness, but I did resist saying anything mean, so I guess one out of two dares isn't too bad.
One of the things we bicker about is how J is a saver and I'm a spender. Anyway, I need to renew my passport and J had been occasionally nagging me to hurry up and get it done. I needed to get my photos re-taken, so when I was at the post office yesterday mailing a package, I saw that they did passport photos. I figured since I was there already, I might as well do it... even though it cost $15 for two measly pictures.
So I came home from work and told J I took the passport photos. The conversation went like this:
me: I got my passport photo taken today at the post office...
J: what?! why didn't you just ask me to take them for you? How much was it?? [it's so annoying b/c anytime I buy anything the first thing he asks is,"how much was it?"]
me: It was kinda expensive... it was $15, but at least I got it done!
J: [with exasperated look on his face] See??! that's the difference between you and me. You have no sense of money. Why would you pay $15 for a photo that we could have done at home for free?!! [I could tell he was annoyed. Previously, I would have shot back,"OMG, seriously? It's $15, it's not going to break the bank." But I refrained...]
me: You're right, I should have done it at home, but I wanted to just get it done with. Besides, when I took your passport photo at home it came out terrible, remember?
And then we laughed b/c his photo is TERRIBLE. The flash whited out his face so he's as white as a sheet of paper, but his lips are red and his eyes are black. He looks really bizarre. Every time we travel and I look at it, I bust out laughing. One time, an airport security guard looked at it and laughed!
So it worked! When I didn't respond defensively or angrily, we didn't fight. hmmmm.... interesting...
